A Dental Hygenist Will Clean Your Teeth and Fight Tooth Decay!

Choosing a qualified dental hygenist is essential for maintaining healthy teeth.  How often should you have your teeth cleaned by a professional hygenist?  Once a year?  Twice a year?  Three times a year?

Years ago, professional teeth cleaning was unheard of and certainly not encouraged.  Could this be why so many people ended up having their teeth pulled and then getting dentures?  Probably so!

Without regular teeth cleanings, tooth decay can result.  As tooth decay develops, it may become necessary to have a tooth filled, or a root canal or, even worse, having a tooth pulled!

At one time there were people who would laugh if you told them you had your teeth cleaned two or three times a year.  Dental hygiene has improved and many people get several teeth cleanings done by their dental hygenist each year in cooperation with their dentist.

Typically, a dentist will recommend at least two teeth cleanings per year to fight plaque and tarter that build up over time.  Plaque is the sticky film that forms around the teeth.  Tartar is the plaque that is not removed by brushing and that hardens on the teeth.

A thorough cleaning by a dental hygenist will include scaling to remove plaque and tartar deposits.  It leaves your teeth and your mouth feeling clean and it leaves you knowing that you are taking good care of your teeth - which you want to last a lifetime!

Following your cleaning, the hygenist or the dentist usually will examine your teeth and gums with an instrument called a "periodontal probe."   This measures the depth of the sulcus, or the groove, around each tooth.

Many adults develop some type of periodontal disease mainly because they don't see the value of daily brushing, daily flossing, and frequent visits to the hygienist.

By having your teeth cleaned as often as your dentist advises, you will avoid any form of periodontal disease--and that means you will save money, save time, and eliminate a lot of pain or discomfort.

Between regular appointments with your hygenist, you want to daily brush your teeth after meals and floss your teeth.
